The Dream
Name: Roger Davis
Age 24
Occupation: Unemployed
Sexuality: Straight
HIV/AIDS Status: +
The Visage
Avatar Claim: Adam Pascal
Eye Color: Dark Green
Hair Color: Dirty Blonde
Height: 6'
Weight: 180
Facial Features: He has a pretty thin face that have a clefted chin and high cheekbones. Unless he's smiling, there's a good chance his lips will seem to be in a permanent grimace or smirk.
Anything Else? His hair's grown out quite a bit in the past year, from his dyed blonde, spiky 'do.
Overall Dress/Appearance: You'd probably never guess that Roger was dying if you looked at him. Despite all the self destructive behavior he had once, he actually looks pretty healthy; long, wavy hair that seems to attract even more admiring glances than his original hair style, a strong jaw and a lean body. He's actually quite attractive, although he never really obsesses over his looks. He's perfectly fine with letting himself go without a shave or haircut for a while and he really doesn't care what his clothes look like so long as he's comfortable. His leather jacket is the one thing that is in his presence almost as much as his guitar.
The Demeanor
Overall Personality: Despite his tough appearance, Roger's actually quite a sensitive and emotional man. He has big dreams, but he's too pessimistic to really believe that they'll happen. He wants to be remembered for his music. He wants to not have to think about how he's dying, although that thought refuses to leave him. He tends to be very moody, going from laughing and joking one minute to kicking someone out of the room so they can just leave him alone. Despite his temper, he's really not as strong as people think and has no problem in admitting it. Sure, he can talk the talk, but if he was actually confronted physically, there might be some problems. He's more likely to run away from those things. He'd rather get him and anyone he cares about out of dodge than pretend to be tough to some people he doesn't really care about.
At his best, Roger is very likely to be teasing his friends, just enjoying their company. He really doesn't need to have them do anything special for them to have fun. They could just go on the subway and manage to make a party out of it, and that's part of why he loves these guys so much. Once you're friends with Roger, he's going to do what he can for you. Sure, there are times when he's a little self absorbed in his own brooding and there are times when he'll be a little merciless in the teasing, but at the end of the day, he's going to be the one who'll try to cheer you up. He's actually capable of being very heartfelt, which has helped him a number of times in writing lyrics. Now if only it would help him now..
What is your character's deepest secret? He's terrified of having to watch the woman he loves die. He's already had to do that once with April.
What is your character's strongest desire? To leave his mark on the world before he dies through a masterpiece of a song.
The Past
Family: Richard Davis-his dad. They don't really talk much.
Anna Davis-his mother. Roger sends a postcard or a letter to her every once in a while, although she doesn't really know what to make of them. That's sort of how it's been since he was a teenager.
Carson Davis-his seventeen year old little sister. He loves her to death.
Previous and Current Romantic Relationships: April Ericcson, who committed suicide after finding out that she had AIDS. Roger took that hard, but he's not seeing Mimi Marquez, another HIV+ girl who is so like April, and yet so different.
History: Roger's childhood, in his humble opinion, was generally very boring. It was clear from the beginning that he just wasn't meant for suburban life, not that it ever stopped his loving mother from trying to help him see that it didn't have to be that boring. The most exciting thing that ever happened to him as a kid was when he took up the guitar after spending all his allowance money on one he saw in a shop window and fell absolutely in love with. The second most exciting thing was the birth of his baby sister. Much to his parents' surprise, he was actually a pretty good big brother, never complaining at their suggestions of including him in whatever semblance of fun he came up with. He never really saw it as a burden; Carson certainly made things a little less boring. He really made a good live in babysitter.
Still, nothing stopped him from leaving this town for, in his opinion, probably the best city in the entire world; New York City. So after a tearful goodbye (for his mom anyway, despite his promises to keep in touch), he was off, along with his childhood best friend, Mark Cohen, who wasn't any less pleased with life here. While Mark was at Brown, Roger managed to bring together the Well Hungarians, his first band, and a cheap apartment. It was through performances in a club that he met one April Ericcson. The chemistry between the two was obvious and they fell passionately in love very quickly. Things were going great; he had the best friends he could ask for as roommates (Tom Collins, an anarchist philosophy professor, Mark, Maureen Johnson, Mark's new, melodramatic girlfriend, and Benjamin Coffin III...well, okay, they weren't exactly best friends), and he had a beautiful, vivacacious girlfriend.
Unfortunately, this dream started going sour after April and Roger started using heroin. He doesn't even really remember how it happened...it just did and they got addicted really quickly. Their friends didn't hesitate to try and help, but it didn't seem to help at all, despite the fact that the two of them had their moments of having enough clarity to realize that this wasn't a good thing and tried to go through withdrawal. But they always fell from the horse at the end and they'd be just as high as ever. The big turning point happened after Roger found April in her bathroom, dead. There was blood all over and the note she left informed him, and eventually the rest of their friends, that they had AIDS. This time, Mark wasn't about to let him hold onto his addiction. So despite the fact that Roger was going insane with withdrawal and grief over his girlfriend, and his own, horribly shortened life, Mark refused to let him use again. Eventually, after a long time in rehab, Roger was clean, but that didn't exactly stop him from feeling depressed. How do you deal with the fact that not only your girlfriend died, but you're going to die young too? He became a recluse, staying in the apartment, often alone, because Mark was either busy filming or with Maureen, and Collins had teaching jobs. We're not even going to touch the fact that Benny abandoned them just to kiss up to a bunch of rich people. It was beginning to look like he was going to be cooped up in that apartment forever, with the only thing that made him laugh anymore; the fact that Maureen dumped Mark for a woman. That was how depressed he was; that he'd take joy from his best friend's misery.
Then one Mimi Marquez, literally, popped into his life on Christmas Eve. She simply knocked on their apartment door when Roger was (what else is new) brooding, asking him to light her candle. There was a clear attraction between the two of them, and they sort of flirted with each other as that darn candle kept on going out, until Roger was completely out of matches and ways to keep Mimi's smack away from her. Later on, she came back in, this time through the fire escape, shocking him with a kiss. Due to his surprise and his heart still grieving over April and the fact that he didn't want to kill Mimi with his virus, he pushed her away, leading her out of the apartment as they fought. Soon after, while walking with Mark to Maureen's latest performance protest, he found Mimi going to The Man, the local drug dealer. Roger apologized and invited her to the dinner party at the Life Cafe that'd be taking place after Maureen's show. At her acceptance, they left after a slight confrontation between The Man and Roger.
After the riot at Maureen's protest, the bohemians that had arrived at the party proceded to humiliate Benny in front of his investor/father in law. Meanwhile, Roger sort of avoided Mimi, until she asked him about that. He wanted to explain, and to be with her, but he found it hard to do until both of their AZT buzzers went off. After this, he found himself completely open to being with her. And so began Roger's second chance at living a good life, and being in love.
Let Us Begin...
RP Sample: "Mark, remember what I said...you know, before I left?" This wasn't exactly easy for Roger, but honestly, the more he saw his best friend after his return from Santa Fe, the more he felt the need to say something. "Look...I didn't mean to insult you or anything...I didn't mean any of the 'poor baby' stuff. That wasn't fair. What I did mean, though...you just live vicariously through the rest of us. What's going to happen when the rest of us are gone? You might still have Maureen and Joanne, but, come on. We all know that's just going to make you feel even more alone."
Honestly, this whole lecture...monologue...whatever the hell you called it, felt so weird for Roger. Really, that was Mark's way of doing things, talking to him like this. Roger had only done this sort of thing once and that was just because they were arguing. "Look...what I'm trying to say is...you helped me get out a funk once. You know as well as I do that quitting...you know, and grieving over April was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I never would have done it without you. Now...I want to help you. What do you say, buddy?"
And so began the silence that would probably feel like ages before he finally got an answer. And if it wasn't positive, it would make that time feel like it wasn't worth it. So why was he bothering? Probably due to the fact that he had stopped being so self absorbed for a few minutes and really thought about what Mark had said. He was the one of them to survive. What was he going to do when Roger died? Because Roger had come to terms with that fate a long time ago. He didn't know when, but he knew that chances were higher than not that the virus that coursed through his veins would eventually take him down. He didn't want to take Mark with him. He wanted his best friend in the world, his brother, to be as happy as he could be. He owed him that.
