The Dream
Name: Joanne Marie Jefferson
Age 29
Occupation: Lawyer
Sexuality: Lesbian
HIV/AIDS Status: -
The Visage
Avatar Claim: Tracie Thoms
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Very dark brown, almost black
Height: 5'6
Weight: 145
Facial Features: Tracie has eyes that seem to stand out against her dark skin, a small, almost perky nose and full, dark pink lips that can reveal a whiter than white smile.
Anything Else? She recently grew her hair out.
Overall Dress/Appearance: Joanne's hair can be either too short to even reach her ears or shoulder length, depending on whether or not she's felt like getting it cut lately. Her hair comes in a multitude of springy curls that could rival Shirley Temple. She has dark, smooth skin (thanks to the magic of cosmetics). She has a very expressive face, so if she's angry or overjoyed, anyone who can see her will be the first to know. She has curves to die for and long legs. Normally, people just see a professional young woman, since she's often wearing dark jackets, suits and the occassional suspenders. She actually has a tendency to dress almost like she's a man, which when you look at her profession (law is, after all, a male dominated profession), makes sense.
The Demeanor
Overall Personality: Joanne can be called many things; a control freak, for example. She's often mistaken for a stick in the mud, someone with absolutely no sense of fun. This is very far from the truth, however. Yes, Joanne likes to have things in order and somewhat organized. Yes, she's very detail oriented, almost anal, about certain things. She was one of those kids who liked to be in charge of what her group of friends were going to play, and it wouldn't be inaccurate to say that this isn't still valid. She likes to be in charge, so that things can be done in, what she thinks, is the best way. She occassionally shoots down other people's ideas, not quite realizing what she's doing. Calling her opinionated would be a tragic understatement.
However, underneath the straight laced exterior lies a great sense of fun and a big heart. If you need someone to support you in anything (within reason; sorry, but nipple piercings are out), Joanne's the best woman for the job. She's willing to help people she cares about, and will often do it with great enthusiasm. She's very passionate, which makes her a good lawyer and an equally good lover and friend. Additionally, she actually enjoys partying as much as anyone else, and it might even be said that after slaving away, her enthusiasm in helping will become more forced. She actually loves to laugh and is often the first one to laugh at a joke. This side of her was brought out even more by one Maureen Johnson, who she loves fiercely.
What is your character's deepest secret? She has a wild side, and she actually envies Maureen for being able to show her own.
What is your character's strongest desire? To not be seen as a stick in the mud, just because she recognizes that there's a time and a place for everything.
The Past
Family: Martin Jefferson-he still calls her Kitten, let's just put it that way
Anna Jefferson-she's the one who nags her to wear dresses and bras and lose the Doc Martens. But they love each other anyway.
Previous and Current Romantic Relationships: The French Ambassador's daughter in Miss Porter's prep school, which lasted up until graduation. Since then, she's had a couple of dates, but hasn't been able to find someone she clicked with yet.
History: Joanne was born to a very well to do family, one that had high hopes for their beautiful baby girl. She was quite ahead of the game, to be perfectly honest, learning things very quickly and seeming to enjoy that. She was reading short sentences by the time she was four and eventually was on the top of her elementary school class. This sort of thing could have given the kids an excuse to give her so much grief, but Joanne was very friendly and confident. She seemed to have a certain amount of people come to her and she had a small group of friends. She seemed to naturally rise up as a leader among her friends, and while some of them got easily annoyed by her assertiveness, some true ones stuck around.
For high school, her parents sent her to a prep school called Miss Porter's. This was actually quite an adjustment; the work was much harder than she had expected. Despite her slight anxiety, she rose above it and wound up doing even better than anyone could have anticipated. To top it off, she fell in love. Her roommate was the French Ambassador's daughter, Denise, who was...unusually friendly. Joanne, having never really experienced the new "feelings" that her parents and teachers had warned her about for puberty, was quite surprised at how easily flustered she was around her. Eventually, they were dating, something that had many of their classmates raising their eyebrows over. Joanne Jefferson? A lesbian? Something about that didn't seem expected; it was a betrayal of expectations, if you will.
After their "first time", Joanne decided that it was time to let her parents know. Were they surprised? Darn right they were. But they didn't give her a hard time about it, being supportive as they could, reminding her that they loved her no matter what. After graduating, Joanne went to Harvard, where she would eventually continue her education by studying law. She decided to concentrate more on her work, and then worry about having a significant other, but there were a small amount of hopefuls that managed to talk her into a date or two. Eventually, Joanne met Maureen Johnson, possibly the most stunning woman she had ever seen. They hit it off very quickly after that chance meeting at the Life Cafe, and after Maureen having to break things off with her current boyfriend, they began dating.
Little did Joanne know that dating someone like Maureen meant a whirlwind of activity and hard work just to keep the relationship alive. Through Maureen, she met the most eclectic group of people she could imagine, including Maureen's ex boyfriend Mark, with whom she's become great friends with. Go figure. Now she'll just have to deal with the fact that she's madly in love with someone like Maureen.
Let Us Begin...
RP Sample: There was something about Maureen's reaction to the fact that she and Mark were actually on the same page in how to help everyone break into the building had Joanne laughing. Whether Maureen was joking or not wasn't entirely clear. All Joanne knew was that a part of her wished that they were fighting for Maureen's love. My God Maureen, sometimes you act like such a high school student, she thought, halfway amused at her newly reinstated girlfriend's behavior. "Start hoisting, wench!" she responded jokingly, now laughing. After all, Maureen couldn't make her do all the work all the time. Still, she also winked at her, as if that was her way of saying, 'I still love you though.'
Love. That was something she was getting used to having in her adult life. It hadn't really hit her until the middle of this week that she was in love with Maureen. She supposed what they said about absence making the heart grow fonder was absolutely right. Still, she wanted to hear Maureen apologize before going back to her, because what would be the point if the girl she loved didn't make an effort to give her a hint that she was loved in return. She would have to tell her, when there were less people around. Those three words were meant to be said in private when it was the first time. It had to be a sweet, intimate moment, one that would ideally lead Joanne to hearing Maureen tell her, "I love you too, Joanne." Even if that sentence ended with Pookie, Joanne would tolerate the nickname for the meaning behind the phrase. That would be all that mattered for that magic moment that she hoped would happen.
