The Demeanor
Overall Personality: Maureen lives up to her nickname, the Drama Queen, in every aspect of her being. Everything is a chance to shine, whether it be positively or negatively. The stage is her first love, and any opportunity she has to be front and center, she'll take it. She's often described as obnoxious and stuck-up by those who don't know her, and sometimes that can prove to be true. She's always loud, always looking for a way to be the center of attention. Most often, yes, ways to further her own interests are foremost in her mind.
What most don't know, however, is that Maureen has a big heart, and usually her most hair-brained ideas are concoted when trying to help a friend out. The whole streaking through the Parthenon bit? Done on a whim after Collins got dumped by some jackass who couldn't handle having a deep conversation. Bummer was that Collins really liked the guy. So, what does she do? Strips down and takes off running through Athens. And even though she's more likely to be found fighting with Joanne than anything else, she loves the lawyer more than anything, and wants nothing more than to be able to settle down with her. it's the whole "settling down" bit that's the problem.
What is your character's deepest secret? Despite her issues with remaining comitted, she really does love Joanne a great deal, and wouldn't know what to do without her.
What is your character's strongest desire? To be able to committed to Joanne and cut down the number of fights they have.
The Past
Family:
Previous and Current Romantic Relationships: Dated Mark when she lived with him, Roger and Collins; currently involved with Joanne.
History: Maureen was the second girl born to Eddie and Nancy Johnson, on October 15, 1966. Her parents could tell from her first moments of life that she'd be a handful, and they were right. She was two handfuls, to be exact. When she wasn't demanding attention, she was getting into anything and everything she could find. This lasted for about five years until Nancy gave birth to another baby girl, Layla. From that point on, Maureen was almost brushed aside, with her older sister Jessica excelling in school, and Layla being the youngest and getting attention no matter what she did.
Well, she wasn't going to stand for that. Much to her parents' dismay, she began acting out more, doing anything she could to garner even a few moments of her parents attention. Cutting class, speaking out, and wreaking havoc in public places became the norm to her, something she did without even thinking about, like breathing or blinking. It only grew worse when she befriended Tom Collins in her freshman year in high school. They formed a sort of protester/anarchist team, doing whatever they could to stir up trouble and get people thinking.
Maureen dropped out her senior year of school, moving to New York with Collins after he graduated. This infuriated her parents, who wanted to see Maureen follow in Jessica's footsteps and be accepted into an Ivy League school. Instead, she moved into a flat on Avenue B with a few other guys of a similar mindset, and the group became a band of starving artists trying to make it i nthe big, bad city. Maureen loved it, the actress in her clawing forward to rear its head.
At this point, she also began dating her roommate, Mark Cohen. He was shy and dorky, her polar opposite, something she adored. She needed someone calm who preferred the background to balance her out. Plus, he was a cameraman, so he'd be able to get her career started! The relationship lasted about a year, until, by chance, she met one Joanne Jefferson at the Life Cafe while organizing her next protest.
Their landlord and ex-roommate Benny Coffin had "turned to the dark side," and married into a wealthy family. She refused to speak to him, and her anger was fueled by his decision to tear down the performance space next to their apartment building to make some stupid digital studio thing. She was using the upcoming Christmas Eve to protest the modernization of the area, encouraging people to cling to a more artistic way of life. The two women clicked from the get-go, Maureen going so far as to dump Mark the next day just to be with Joanne.
Christmas rolled around quickly, and the protest went down without a hitch, working perfectly even with the riot that ensued afterward. She and Joanne met up with the rest of the gang (Mark, Roger, his new potential love interest Mimi, Collins, and his new lover, Angel) at the Life Cafe afterward and, much to their chagrin, discovered Benny and his father-in-law there as well. So, what do they do? Tell him to go to hell with true bohemian style. The group is closer than ever as New Year's approaches, and Maureen is finding herself fantasizing that her relationship with Joanne may go to the next level even with their constant bickering.
Let Us Begin...
RP Sample: Maureen headed up the busy city streets to Joanne's office, cursing how cold New York was in February. 34 degrees just wasn't conducive to a slinky black Valentine's dress that barely covered her kneecaps! Joanne better not be too busy for this, she couldn't help but think, shivering as she pulled open the front door to the law firm. She'd spent all day planning this out, and Joanne calling to tell her she'd be staying late had only thrown a minor wrench in the plans. She'd just had to move location from the apartment to Joanne's office. Nothing huge. Smiling at the receptionist, she paused to ask if Ms. Jefferson had a client at the moment before heading in the direction of her girlfriend's office, smirking to herself.
Coming around the corner to a quiet, more secluded area of the building, Maureen paused again, made sure her dress was where it was supposed to be, flicked her hair over her shoulder, then continued on her way, poking her head into Joanne's office without knocking, as per usual. The overworked lawyer was on the phone, her back to the door. Smirking again, she was able to slip in unnoticed, hiding the flowers she'd brought behind her back. Creeping forward, she pushed herself up and settled on top of Joanne's desk, unable to keep from laughing when Joanne hung up the phone and turned around to see her, having appeared ot of nowhere.
"Hi Pookie," she giggled, leaning forward to kiss the other woman's cheek. "I just thought I'd stop by and see what you were doing. Oh! And somehow these came into my possession on the way here; don't ask me how. I was walking along minding my own business, and got attacked by a dozen roses. Weird huh? Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day."
