The Demeanor
Overall Personality: Leo can be called a lot of things; a survivor, a loyal 'til the end friend, a brave (and incredibly lucky) guy, whatever. And maybe it's true. Leo used to be the kind of kid who ran away at the first sign of a spider. Now he's taking chances, going by his gut instinct. Sure, it's gotten him hurt sometimes, but he prefers that to being afraid and hidden all the time. He's learned to move on from traumatic experiences, although there are times when he can't get them off of his mind. He doesn't like to dwell on the past and would prefer to face life's challenges head on, because no matter what, he grows as a person when he does. That's how he sees life; a learning experience, a chance to be who you're meant to be.
Despite his heart of a lion, he doesn't treat life as nothing but a war. In fact, it's a challenge to find someone who smiles or cares more than he does about things. He's absolutely the best friend you could ask for; he'll encourage you to do what you want, because it'll make you happy, and he'll help pick up the pieces if your pursuits are running dry. He's kind of a man of action, which makes sense, since he's aiming for a career in acting. You can probably tell what he's thinking more by his expressions, body language or his actions than his words. There are simply times when he doesn't talk much, because he doesn't always think that words are needed to describe how he feels. Usually, the quieter he is, the more he's enjoying or hating something.
Leo doesn't try to keep secrets; he thinks that secrets can quickly act as a poison, torturing you into either losing your mind or spitting it out. He knows better than to bottle things up, because a part of him blames bottling his sexuality up three years ago on how things turned out. Additionally as a result of his past experiences, he's a lot calmer, able to hold onto grace under fire. He doesn't panic unless there's a genuinely good reason to do so and he'll be the one to tell someone who is panicking to snap the hell out of it, because freaking out isn't going to help. He can come off as harsh when he's angry enough and he's been known to give people the cold shoulder so he can get over his anger. Then the next day, he'll probably be the one apologizing, even if it was the other person's fault.
What is your character's deepest secret? His body still aches from when he got beaten up. He doesn't like bringing it up, so he lies when the pain comes.
What is your character's strongest desire? To live life his way and by his own rules.
The Past
Family: Eric Reeves-his dear old dad; they get along pretty well
Summer Reeves-his hippie of a mom; she wears a "I Love My Gay Son" shirt, let's just put it that way.
Jacqueline Reeves-his big sister; she's uber protective of him
Vaughn Reeves-his little brother; Vaughn pretty much hero worshipped him when he was little, but the thirteen year old is starting to come into his own
Previous and Current Romantic Relationships: Romantically, there's actually hasn't been anything too serious for him. He almost got together with his old friend Zach, but it never actually happened.
History: Leo was the second child of the Reeves' family, which at the time, consisted of an Ivy League graduate in Eric, a hippie in Summer, and a very take charge seven year old in Jackie. He was given quite a warm welcome, even by his big sister, who was actually really excited to have a live in playmate and someone to take care of. For a little kid, she wasn't a bad "second Mommy in command". When he was first learning to talk, he actually called both older females in his life "Mama," maybe partially because Jackie was too hard for him to say. Either way, it showed how close he felt to his big sister. As for his dad, there were times when he felt a little unsure of how to raise his kids, even after seven years of practice with Jackie, so Summer sort of acted as his guide.
As a little kid, Leo was one of those kids who was kind of afraid of everything, often running to whichever family member was closest when there was a bad storm outside, for example. All the same, he managed to make a good amount of friends, even with his first impression to his kindergarten class of clutching onto his mother's skirt. It could have been just the fact that he was a humble, generally sweet guy. The girls absolutely adored him, wondering if he was proof that Prince Charmings did exist. One of the few girls who genuinely liked him and not just a fantasy, was Derica Williams, another happy misfit. With his awkwardness and her two fathers, they sort of had a lot in common, and this would turn out to be one of those friendships that lasts for a lifetime. Around this time, his little brother Vaughn was born. Much like Jackie did for him, Leo did everything he could to take care of Vaughn, since Jackie and his parents were getting busier and busier as time went on (although they were never too busy for Family Game Night). Vaughn eventually came to see him as his hero and that feeling has stayed with the younger Reeves brother.
Despite having a best friend with two dads that treated him like he was their own child, Leo found himself paralyzed as he began to realize that he didn't see girls the way he should have. No amount of 'everyone grows at his own rate' or 'hey, girls mature faster than boys' speeches assuaged his fears. Things began to get worse when he started getting crushes on his male classmates. Even now, he'll never be sure of why he was so scared...maybe it was because school, unlike home, wasn't so safe for people like him. He knew his family and true friends would never mind, but he also knew that nothing could really stay a secret if more than one person knew. So he kept it quiet, becoming so silent that Derica began to worry and tried to coax him into telling her what was the matter with everything she had. Eventually, he blurted out, "I'm gay, are you happy now?!"
Strangely, he did feel happy. There was something about saying those words that made him feel so much better about the fact. Getting it off his chest was, by far, the best feeling he had ever had. Of course, Derica gave him the biggest hug she could manage from her slightly slimmer body and if that were at all possible, it made them even closer. That night he told his family, who supported him with open arms (despite how bewildered his father was; Leo didn't exactly fit the stereotype, watching sports with his dad and all). Unfortunately, not everyone was so delighted. People who weren't so open minded overheard him talking with Derica the next day at school, the last day before Holiday Break. He was about to walk home when he was brutally attacked. Once he was found and brought to the hospital, there was a great number of people that thought he was going to die.
After a number of weeks, Leo woke up, with several broken bones and a fractured skull. He'll never, ever underestimate the power of pain again after experiencing that. While, yes, knowing what happened left him much more jaded, this didn't stop him from being honest with himself. In fact, you could say that it made him more honest, because honestly, he survived. He takes that as a sign that he had done the right thing. After several months of recovery and doting when it came to his loved ones, Leo was able to walk properly without crutches or anything and he continued on with school. However, he decided that he needed to do more with his life, instead of just going through the motions and surviving.
Derica seemed to know just the thing. As soon as she could get tickets, she dragged him to his first Broadway musical. To say he was skeptical was an understatement; he was more of a rock kind of guy, with some smattering of the 60's thanks to his mom. He wasn't really sure if the theatre was his sort of thing. But he could never really say no to Derica's persuasion skills, so he relented and to this day, he can never say he regrets it. As soon as he could, he tried out for the Spring Musical. Sure, it made catching up on work a little hard, but his big sister being something of a genius allowed him to not only get a lead role, but to also getting better grades than he'd ever gotten. Even when Jackie came around less and less, her tips on studying and schoolwork wound up helping him graduate with a high GPA and a scholarship to college in New York. He's kept his love of acting throughout his high school career, but he knows that it'd be smart to major in something else, to be on the safe side. So what did he choose? Psychology. So now he's on his own for the first time and is hoping to experience a new side of life.
Let Us Begin...
RP Sample: Somehow he knew that he hadn't moved in quite some time. The exact amount wasn't certain, but Leo seemed to instinctively know that he hadn't been awake for a long time. He still wasn't fully conscious; simply starting to dig his way out of the ground. However, he was pretty sure that anyone who looked at the sun for the first time in a while never felt quite the amount of pain he did as he slowly regained consciousness. His head, his legs, his entire body was searing with crushing pain. It was enough to make him want to go into the dark again and not come out until he never had to feel that sort of pain again. Yet something inside him told him to stop being a coward and wake up.
So with a great deal of effort, he opened his eyes, for even they weren't spared from pain. "Ugh," he groaned, only able to move his neck to get a good look at his surroundings. A hospital room; he might have guessed. Somehow he had been spared from the disorientation he had seen in far too many movies and TV shows. There was no possible way he could be in this much pain and not be in a hospital. If he were dead, he'd like to think that whatever deity up there would have spared him this excrutiating torture, thanks to his own body. He moved his eyes around a bit more, taking in the white walls and the general sameness of the whole room. Did they honestly think that would make anyone feel better? What was so wrong with making it look somewhat like an average bedroom, honestly?
After that,he glanced to his side, seeing a sleeping figure in the dark. He recognized the figure as his mother and he sighed. He didn't want her to be asleep. God knew how long she had been waiting for this. So for her sake, he sat up a bit, wincing as he did, because his body was pleading with him to stop. Yet he brought his arm forward as well as he could (that was in a cast) and reached for her hand, but wound up pulling his sheet a bit. Thankfully, that was enough to make his mother stir. She pulled herself out of what must have been a troubled dream and gazed at him, her eyes widening as the image registered.
"Hi Mom," he whispered, his voice hoarse from misuse. He even tried to smile. He begged the muscles in his face, Come on, for her, please, but to no avail. And sadly, he had to see his mother cry. He let out a sigh, whispering, "Please Mom, I'm okay now..." All right, so he was lying, but that was what you did to help those you loved. She didn't need to be hurting as much as he was. No one needed to.
